Year 10 Orientation Camp

Year 10s start the year with an Orientation Camp to get to know each other, their teachers and some of the facilities at JMSS and Monash University. There are many activities as well as a talent night. Students stay on campus at Monash residential halls and ll meals are provided.

Harmony Day

JMSS celebrates Harmony Day with a BBQ, international desserts, and a variety of cultural workshops including taekwando, origami, mahjong, juggling, manga, bollywood dance, and zumba.

World Challenge

Students work together in groups to plan international trips. They were hard at work at the JMSS Swimming Carnival barbequing up a storm for hungry swimmers, raising money for their next expedition. Students are responsible for fundraising, itinerary planning, budgeting and all activities both at home and while overseas. Students are doing volunteer work at an orphanage in Cambodia and visiting Laos in 2014. Students will go to Borneo in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020 and spend time at an orangutan sanctuary.

Year 12 Study Camp

Study skills and guest speakers are a feature of this camp at Lord Somers.

Year 12 Formal

Students take a lead role in planning and running the Formal, and it's a fantastic night for teachers and students in their formal attire. 

Marine Biology

Penguins and rock pools are a highlight of our trip to Phillip Island.

Our Dynamic Earth field camp

Week-long trip to Mt Oberon, Tidal River, Squeaky Beach, Lillypilly Gully, Whisky Bay and Buchan. Fossils, structural geology, early morning starts, after dinner demonstrations, and practice with minerals and rock kits. 

Debating

Debating teams train after school and compete in multi-school competitions. Congratulations to teams making it to the finals.

Interschool sports

JMSS strongly supports student participation in interschool events such as swimming, athletics, golf, and round robin events. JMSS has had teams competing in State finals in Tennis, Hockey, Table Tennis, Badminton and other sports. 

International Students Science Fair

JMSS students present their research and experimental work at fairs around Australia and the world, recently including Canada. Students work on a research project, create a poster, present their poster, make a cultural presentation and participate in workshops and seminars. We have sent teams to the 2014 ISSF in Moscow, we hosted ISSF in 2015 at JMSS in Melbourne, and sent teams to Singapore in 2016 and 2019 and South Korea in 2017. Supercomputing Conference

JMSS students and staff have attended the Supercomputing Conference in the USA each year since 2012 in Denver, Salt Lake City, and New Orleans. The trips are financially supported the Monash Faculty of Information Technology. The 2017 Supercomputing Conference will be held in Denver USA http://sc17.supercomputing.org/

Great Victorian Bike Ride

Students take a lead role in planning the bike trip with support from staff. Training rides are on weekends.

International Student Exchange

JMSS is building partnerships with international schools with a science focus. We sent our first group of 10 students to the National University of Singapore (NUS) High School of Science and Mathematics early in 2014, and have a group of Singaporean students visit Melbourne and study at JMSS later in the year. in 2015 we also started a partnership with Mahidol Wittayanusorn (MWITS) in Thailand fo cultural exchanges. Students look forward to hosting their new buddy in Melbourne on the return trip. 

Reef & Rainforest Trip

13-day science trip available to Year 11 students around the Cairns region in Far North Queensland. The trip involves students conducting research at many locations on the Great Barrier Reef and in and around the Daintree Rainforest.
