Model students win through to maths challenge final

Congrats YiJie, Paromita, Alex and Dylan who are through to the finals of IM2C, a maths modelling competition. This year’s challenge set students the task of deciding where to hold a three-day international meeting. The meeting’s participants were traveling in from all over the world and the chosen location needed to minimise jet lag and maximise their productivity.

ClimateWatch's citizen scientists with ear out for early warbles add sound contribution to database

The Age - 9 August 2014 - Deborah Gough

More than 60,000 observations made by Australian citizen scientists are feeding answers to these questions and hundreds more into a database run by ClimateWatch, which is run by the Smithsonian Institution's  Earthwatch Institute.

Linda McIver, a teacher at John Monash Science School, has her year 11 information technology students working with the ClimateWatch data to write programs that hopefully make those programs more user-friendly to scientists.

Spotlight on Science at JMSS

Monash Memo - 13 November 2013

On 28 and 29 October, JMSS was transformed into an amazing world of science with over 300 exhibits spread through every teaching space in the school. By dusk, the school was abuzz with students, parents and Monash academics.

The Hon. Anna Burke, Federal Member for Chisholm, graced the event, and the keynote speaker was Professor Arthur Lowery of the School of Engineering.

The students involved - including Year 10 students and a number of VCE students - left visitors in awe of their enthusiasm for science, their creativity, and the articulate way in which they explained their observations and defended their findings and conclusions.
